Carbon Cycle North Carolina LLC is seeking an experienced, hands-on Wastewater Manager to lead the operation, performance, and continued improvement of its industrial wastewater treatment facility. This position has primary ownership of wastewater operations and directly supports a team of Wastewater Technicians in support of safe, reliable, and compliant plant operations.

C2NC develops and operates industrial-scale anaerobic digestion facilities that transform organic byproducts into pipeline-grade renewable natural gas. These facilities not only reduce methane emissions but also offer a sustainable, circular alternative to traditional energy sourcing. Our flagship site in Warsaw, NC is one of the largest of its kind in the Southeast - and it’s just the beginning.

The Warsaw facility receives agricultural and organic feedstocks, produces pipeline-quality renewable natural gas, manages digestate, and treats process wastewater through an on-site membrane bioreactor system.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Plant Manager, the Wastewater Manager leads day-to-day wastewater treatment performance, reliability, optimization, and continued improvement. The position maintains a strong hands-on presence in the plant; helps develop Wastewater Technicians; and works closely with the Operations Manager, Plant Engineer, Lab Manager, Maintenance Manager, wastewater consultants, third-party engineers, vendors, and contractors. The operation treats high-strength wastewater with influent ammonia concentrations averaging approximately 4,000 mg/L and dewaters approximately 250,000 gallons per day of sludge using screw presses. Strong practical expertise in biological nitrogen removal and solids handling is essential.

Key Responsibilities

• Own day-to-day wastewater treatment performance, reliability, and optimization.

• Maintain a strong hands-on presence in the plant, including troubleshooting, sampling, testing, process adjustments, and equipment evaluation.

• Manage and optimize nitrification and denitrification under high-ammonia loading conditions.

• Understand and interpret process-control testing including NH3, NO2/NO3, COD, alkalinity, MLSS/MLVSS, DO, ORP, OUR/SOUR, and related analyses.

• Determine when additional sampling or diagnostic testing is needed and translate results into operating decisions.

• Manage sludge handling and screw-press dewatering, including polymer optimization, cake solids, capture efficiency, and equipment performance.

• Lead wastewater-related capital and improvement projects, including equipment selection, vendor coordination, engineering, construction, commissioning, and startup.

• Work with the EHS Manager to support environmental compliance, sampling, reporting, and recordkeeping.

• Develop SOPs, operating targets, troubleshooting procedures, and process-control strategies.

• Coordinate effectively with engineers, consultants, equipment manufacturers, chemical suppliers, laboratories, and contractors.

• Provide management-level response to significant wastewater process or equipment issues outside normal working hours when necessary.

Qualifications

• 5-7+ years of meaningful wastewater treatment experience, including significant hands-on biological treatment experience.

• Strong practical knowledge of activated sludge, nitrification/denitrification, process control, laboratory analysis, solids management, and mechanical dewatering.

• Demonstrated ability to diagnose biological process problems using laboratory data and operating trends.

• Strong leadership, communication, decision-making, and project-management skills.

• A specific college degree is not required. Relevant technical expertise and demonstrated experience are valued over formal education.

Required Skills and Competencies

• Ability to troubleshoot treatment performance, equipment, instrumentation, and operating issues in a hands-on plant environment.

• Sound judgment in using sampling results, operating trends, and process data to prioritize actions and make timely operating decisions.

• Clear written and verbal communication skills for documenting operating conditions, reporting results, coordinating corrective actions, and working effectively across plant, technical, compliance, vendor, and laboratory teams.

• Strong organization and follow-through, including the ability to manage priorities, maintain accurate records, support SOP development, and drive corrective actions through completion.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and basic data tracking, reporting, and trend-analysis tools.

Preferred Experience

• Experience with high-strength industrial wastewater.

• Experience with DAF clarification, screw presses, anaerobic digestion, biogas/RNG facilities, and high-ammonia waste streams.

• North Carolina wastewater operator certification.

Work Environment and Schedule

This is a full-time, in-person role at the C2NC facility in Warsaw, North Carolina. The Wastewater Manager must be comfortable working in an active industrial wastewater treatment setting, maintaining a hands-on presence in the plant, and collaborating with plant management, technical personnel, consultants, vendors, contractors, and laboratory partners. The position also provides management-level response to significant wastewater process or equipment issues outside normal working hours when necessary.
